MORGAN MCDONNELL, a native of Davis, CA has been doing make up since 2009 and in her words “…loving every minute of it” She has a Bachelors degree in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota.
Hello dear readers! Morgan McDonnell here, one of the lucky make-up artists for The Gordon Hunt Documentary. When I signed on to this project, I’ll be honest; I had no clue of the enormous impact Gordon had made on Hollywood. On my first day I learned that he was a major game changer in the world of voice over acting. The way Gordon explained it however, made it seem like it was no big deal, like it was just another part of his history. To him, he was just helping talented actors work on things that would enhance their skills. I just sat there listening to him thinking, “WHAT?! How can this guy be so humble and down to earth?!” And the funny thing was, everyone we interviewed said the same thing. The words humble, down to earth, patient, and kind were said in almost every interview. All the people we talked to were so genuinely thankful for having Gordon in their lives.
I had the pleasure of going to a few of his acting classes and watching him in action. He was eloquent, gently honest, encouraging, and SO spot on with his coaching. It was as if he was helping people become the person they were supposed to be, rather than teaching them to act. I also didn’t realize so many of the actors we see in film and television got their start in Gordon’s class.
One of my favorite things I took away from this experience was the Gordon-ism, “I hope you like them,” which was in reference to the mindset one should have before going in for an audition or job interview. I have since then said this to several of my loved ones (and reminded myself a few times), explaining that you shouldn’t stress yourself out worrying if someone likes you, because then you’re not putting your best self forward. You want to work for/with people you like and respect, so go into these situations hoping you want to be around the people involved and you will handle yourself with calm confidence.
Because of this project I have seen some spectacular acting, heard vintage Hollywood gossip, met the second most interesting man in the world, visited some of the most beautiful homes in Los Angeles, and seen grown men and women cry from the love they have for Gordon Hunt. I had such an amazing time working on this documentary. Much love and gratitude goes out to everyone involved.
