JEFF GREENBERG is an Emmy winner and one of the top casting directorsin Hollywood. He is known for his work on iconic and award winning shows such as Cheers, Frasier, and Modern Family.
I was thrilled to be asked to participate in this documentary highlighting the career of one of my mentors, Gordon Hunt. It all came out of a particularly lovely gathering given by Gordon's uber-talented daughter, Helen, at her cozy home which was strewn with the arts and crafts evidence of Gordon's granddaughter, Makena. The love that Gordon and Helen share was palpable that night, as was the adoration of his past students who attended, seemingly still glowing from the impact that Gordon had on some of them, like myself, decades prior.
As everyone mingled before we all sat around to give testimonies to Gordon's particular
talents as a teacher (only one of his many talents to be sure), I told Helen the story
of when I congratulated him when Helen won her Oscar. Gordon replied, "...well, it was
inevitable". He had always known something about her that everyone came around to
finding out later, much as he always seemed to have insights as to the particular skills
and paths of his students.
When the evening was over, we all left with a smile on our faces. So many old friends.
So much good will. So many positive memories. I was so happy to hear that the
aura from that evening would be extended with the Gordon documentary. I had the
loveliest time when Roger and his first rate crew showed up at my home to have me
chat about my time with Gordon, and how my positive experience interning in the
casting office of the Mark Taper Forum turned out to be foreshadowing of a career in
casting that I never saw coming. Gordon's support of me as an actor and a casting
director have always been evident to me.
